In ages past there existed seven dragons, sworn by their creator to serve as guardians and stewards of the people of the world. Each was given a land and people to govern, and sway over one of the elemental forces. Now there are only six, for in an act of treachery their brother Vritra was slain. The seven dragons are as follows:<blockquote>[[Vritra]] - guardian of the ancient kingdom of [[Eld'thar]], and the warden of earth

[[Tianlong]] - guardian of the island nation of [[Nonipon]], and warden of Storms

[[Jormungandr]] - guardian of the crystal kingdom of [[Galatea]], and warden of Ice

[[Fafnir]] - guardian of the free cities of [[Rhoston]], and warden of Fire

[[Azdaja]] - guardian of the kingdom of [[Korinth]], and warden of Wind

[[Nidhoggr]] - guardian of the Holy Kingdom of [[Lacria]], and warden of Darkness

[[Bahamut]] - guardian of the Kingdom of [[Zepro]], and warden of Light</blockquote>Each dragon takes for themselves a human speaker; this person creates a bond of soul with the dragon and becomes [[dragonkin]], allowing them to communicate empathically with their bonded. The speaker then serves as a representative of the dragon's will to the people, as dragons themselves are incapable of speaking human tongues. The particular role of this speaker within the government of their people varies from nation to nation, but each enjoys a greatly privileged station.

In addition to serving as protectors to their people, dragons also serve an important purpose within the greater ecosystem of the world; they serve as conduits for the lifestream, guiding the flow of [[Aether]] as it passes between the moons and the planet above.
